ABILENE, Texas – McMurry allowed a school record 27 runs in a 27-11 loss to New Mexico Highlands Saturday afternoon at Walt Driggers Field. Kyle Gutchewsky and Phillip Rodriguez drove in five runs apiece to lead the Cowboys to their third-straight victory to start the 2010 season.

McMurry kept the score close early after a five-run second inning for the Cowboys highlighted by Christian Garcia's grand slam, McMurry countered back with five runs in the bottom of the second. Bradd Baker doubled home two runs and Colby Walding hit a 3-run homer to knot the score at five.

Jason Carr and Gutchewsky each hit sacrifice flies for N.M. Highlands in the top of the third and McMurry's Luke Boswell singled home a run in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 7-6.

However, the Cowboys scored six runs apiece in each of the fourth and fifth innings to begin the rout. Michael Dibiasi surrendered nine runs, all earned, for McMurry before Spencer Smith allowed nine more in two-thirds of an inning worked. Errors cost McMurry and just one of the nine runs was charged to Smith. Rodriguez hit the second grand-slam of the game for NMH in the fifth.

Then, in the sixth, NMH added three runs, then the Cowboys added four in the seventh and one in the eighth. McMurry scored three in the fifth thanks to a 3-run homer by Jordan Brown and Jake Mullin hit his first home run of the season in the sixth to give McMurry its final two runs of the ball game.

Cruz Sedillo picked up the win for the Cowboys relieving starter David Saiz who pitched just 2.1 innings after surrendering six runs. Sedillo allowed three runs in 2.2 innings, walked none and struck out two.

Dibiasi was charged with the loss for McMurry and struggled along with Smith and Chris Semchenko who gave up eight runs. Dylan De Leon and Evan Welch combined to hold NMH scoreless in the final 2.2 innings.

In 1996, Sul Ross State scored 24 runs against McMurry in its first year as a program. Until Saturday, that was the most runs allowed by McMurry in a game. In fact, Saturday's 27-run performance by NMH was just the third time in school history that McMurry had allowed more than 18 runs in a game.

McMurry will try for its first win of the season Sunday against the University of the Southwest at 1 p.m. in Abilene.
