Box Score
ABILENE, Texas – McMurry held off No. 25 Trinity University 11-10 Tuesday afternoon at Walt Driggers Field. McMurry scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to build a 9-5 lead, but eventually the Tigers knotted the score at 10 in the top of the eighth before
Matt Thompson's infield single with the bases loaded drove in the go-ahead run for McMurry in the bottom of the eighth to help seal the victory.
After Thompson's game-winning hit,
Cory Davis picked up the win in relief, and the only scare Trinity put up in the top of the ninth was when Chris Walden reached on an error with one out. His pinch runner, Will Keiser, stole second with one strike and two outs, but Davis rang up Nick Pappas on strikes to end the game.
In the bottom of the fourth, McMurry strung together eight consecutive singles and
Jeff Jackson hit a sacrifice fly to cap the offensive explosion and McMurry produced seven runs to extend the lead to 9-5.
However, the Tigers picked up two runs in the fifth and added three more in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth,
Jake Mullin singled with one out before
Derek Saltzgaber hit a single and moved to second base on an error by the leftfielder while Mullin moved to third. Trinity intentionally walked to
Jeff Jackson to load the bases before bringing in the ace of their starting pitching staff Michael Panozzo.
However, Panozzo and the Trinity defense caught a tough break when Thompson's liner ricocheted off the mound and Kevin Clements couldn't get to the ball at shortstop and Mullin came around to score.
Davis threw two scoreless innings to move to 2-2 on the season while Ryan Lucero was charged with the loss as he fell to 3-1 on the season.
Trinity fell to 18-6 on the season while McMurry improved to 9-13 on the season with a crucial three-game set upcoming with Schreiner Friday and Saturday in Abilene to resume American Southwest Conference West Division play. McMurry carries a 2-4 league record into the series.
