Marietta College pitches, hits past McMurry for 10-2 win

Box Score

ABILENE, Texas – Kyle Lindquist pitched No. 17-ranked Marietta College to a 10-2 win over McMurry University Tuesday night at Walt Driggers Field. Lindquist threw six innings and didn't allow an earned run striking out six to pick up his first win of the season.

The Pioneers scored in four-straight innings and the pitching combined to limit McMurry to four hits on the evening. McMurry actually struck first when Colby Walding scored from first base on a dropped fly by the Marietta leftfielder with two outs to give McMurry a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second.

However, in the top of the third, the Pioneers scored three runs on three hits to start the offensive onslaught. Marietta added a run in the fourth, three in the fifth and Casey Levens hit a 2-run homer in the sixth to make the score 9-1. Chris Beatty scored on a passed ball in the eighth for the Marietta's final run.

In the bottom of the ninth, Matt Thompson scored on a sacrifice fly from Michael Dibiasi, but that would be all that McMurry would rally in the final inning.

Lindquist needed just 85 pitches in those six innings and walked just one hitter to help the Pioneers improve to 4-2 on the season. Spencer Smith picked up the loss for McMurry allowing six runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings to fall to 0-2.

Levens finished with three hits and three RBI and Jordan Grilliot drove in a pair to help lead the Pioneers. Dibiasi, Derek Saltzgaber, Brian Durst and Colby Walding were the only McMurry players to collect hits and the team dropped to 6-9 on the season.

McMurry returns to action Friday and Saturday in Seguin with the American Southwest Conference West Division series opener for both McMurry and the hosts, Texas Lutheran. Friday, the single nine-inning game is scheduled for 2 p.m. and Saturday the doubleheader is scheduled for Noon. TLU is the defending ASC West champion and carries an 11-4 record into the contest.
