Women within striking distance, men in eighth after day one of ASC Golf Championships

HORSESHOE BAY, Texas – The McMurry University women's golf team is within striking distance after round one of the American Southwest Conference Championships with one round to go while the men's team is in eighth place out of nine teams after two rounds with one to spare Tuesday.

On the women's side, McMurry is in third place with a 344 while Mary Hardin-Baylor leads with a 335 and Schreiner is in second place with a 342. Kelly Green leads McMurry at fourth overall with an 81 while Katie McElroy is just behind at sixth overall with an 84. Monica Harris shot a 89 and tied for 17th place through round one, Libby Scarlett's 90 tied her for 22nd and Courtney Norton is tied for 26th with a 93 in the 35-woman field.

McMurry's women also hold a narrow advantage over UT-Tyler. The Lady Patriots are just one stroke back and LeTourneau is in fifth with a 352. Feasibly, the top five teams could make a run at the title when the 36-hole tournament concludes Tuesday morning. TLU's women are sixth with a 368 and UT-Dallas rounds out the seven-team field with a 426.

On the men's side, McMurry was ninth out of nine teams after round one but moved up a spot after the second round. The team is 43 strokes off the lead of UT-Tyler who's two-round total Monday equaled 582 while Mary Hardin-Baylor is a distant second at 601. The third through eighth place teams are just nine strokes apart.

Schreiner shot a 616, Mississippi College is in fourth with a 617, Concordia-Texas is fifth with a 618, Texas Lutheran is sixth with a 619, UT-Dallas is seventh with a 624 and McMurry is eighth with a 625. Hardin-Simmons rounded out the nine-team field with a  648.

McMurry's first round ended with a team score of 321 before the much-improved score of 304 in round two. Matt Ragovin is the team's leader and is in a tie for eighth place after shooting  a 75 in each of the first two rounds.

David Buchheit is tied for 15th with a  152 (79-73), Nick Mehigan is tied for 19th with a 154 (78-76), Jeff Wesson is in 44th place with a 171 (91-80) and Tyler Becker is 46th with a  178 (89-89) in the 46-man field.

Both the men's and the women's team will conclude their respective tournaments with 18 holes Tuesday morning.
