McMurry women finish fourth, men eighth at ASC Golf Championships

HORSESHOE BAY, Texas – McMurry University's women placed fourth out of seven teams at the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Tuesday while the men placed eighth out of nine teams.

Katie McElroy earned second-team all-conference honors after tying for eighth place with a two-round total of 171. She shot an 84 in the opening round Monday and followed with an 87 Tuesday to lead McMurry.

Monica Harris tied for 16th place while Libby Scarlett and Kelly Green each tied for 19th place. Courtney Norton rounded out McMurry's golfers with a tie for 23rd place out of the 35-woman field.

Schreiner University's women took its first ever ASC title while UT-Tyler finished second and Mary Hardin-Baylor was third. Schreiner shot a 676 over two rounds while McMurry was 16 strokes behind at 692. McMurry finished ahead of LeTourneau, Texas Lutheran and UT-Dallas who finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

On the men's side, McMurry its tournament with a third-round score of 324, which was the highest total of its three rounds. Monday, McMurry shot a 625 (321-304) to stand eighth, but the team struggled in the final round and couldn't move up in the standings. Hardin-Simmons was the only school behind McMurry with a three-round total of 966, 17 strokes behind McMurry.

UT-Tyler won the ASC men's title with a three-round total of 876 finishing 34 strokes ahead of the runner up: Mary Hardin-Baylor. UMHB shot a 910, Schreiner placed third with a  914, Concordia-Texas' 923 was good for fourth, and Mississippi College was one stroke behind at 924 for fifth. Texas Lutheran finished seventh with a 937 and McMurry's 949 was eighth.

David Buchheit was McMurry's top finisher tying for 16th place with a 230 (79-73-78). Nichk Mehigan tied for 20th place, Matt Ragovin finished 24th, Jeff Wesson was 44th and Tyler Becker was 45th in the 46-man field.
