Men's tennis team to contend for ASC Title after semi-finals win over HPU

TYLER, Texas – For the second-straight year McMurry will play for the American Southwest Conference men's tennis championship after the team defeated Howard Payne Friday 5-0 in the semi-finals round.

McMurry, the ASC West Division champion, received a first-round bye in the tournament and showed no mercy to Howard Payne in a 5-0 victory to improve to 13-6 on the year. On the doubles court, McMurry swept with Will Davis and Bryan Rainwater taking a win over Ross Sidman and Edward Martinez on the No. 1 court with an 8-2 victory. From the No. 2 court, Daniel Olivares and Levi Cockrill defeated Raymon Borjas and Chris Sutton 8-4. Then, Brent Abilez and Tony Williams closed with an 8-2 win on the No. 3 court over the Yellow Jackets' Jeff Toyne and Ryan Prather.

On the singles court it was Olivares from the No. 3 court and Cockrill from the No. 6 spot taking wins. Olivares defeated Toyne 6-0, 6-1 and Cockrill defeated Will Thomas 6-0, 6-2. In tournament play, once five points are scored by a team the remainder of the matches go unfinished.

Howard Payne's season finishes with an 8-11 record and the Yellow Jackets entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed from the west division.

McMurry will play the winner of UT-Tyler, the hosts and LeTourneau at 3:30 p.m. in the championship tournament.
