TYLER, Texas – The UT-Tyler Patriots won their third consecutive American Southwest Conference men's tennis championship and will advance to the NCAA Regional Tournament after defeating McMurry University in the championship match Sunday afternoon.
With doubles action coming first, UT-Tyler held leads on the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles courts while McMurry was leading on the No. 3 court midway through the match. UT-Tyler finished with wins on the No. 1 and No. 2 court while the Patriots' Joshua Chavez and Adam Chirhart fought back after trailing 5-2 to take an 8-6 victory to help UT-Tyler sweep the doubles court, which left UT-Tyler needing just two wins on the singles court to take the victory.
McMurry's
Brent Abilez and
Levi Cockrill were leading their matches on the No. 5 and No. 6 courts respectively, however, the Patriots' Chirhart and Kevin Wright completed wins over McMurry's
Daniel Olivares and
Tony Williams respectively to take the clinching victories. Abilez and Cockrill's matches were left unfinished while UT-Tyler led on the No. 1 and No. 2 singles courts as well, but the matches did not conclude and were not needed to decide the champion.
The Patriots won their seventh-straight ASC East Division title heading into the conference tournament and started the string of ASC Tournament championships in 2008 with a win over Hardin-Simmonsp, they defeated McMurry in the semi-finals in 2009 on the way to a title before three-peating with a championship win over McMurry Sunday.
McMurry's season concludes with a 13-7 overall record and head coach
Mark Hathorn bids farewell to Abilez and
Will Davis who played their final matches as seniors. Abilez and Davis can point back at their legacy by knowing they helped McMurry win its first two ASC West Division titles in school history in 2009 and 2010.
