ABILENE, Texas - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Assocation ranked McMurry's men's track team as the No. 1 team in the nation for outdoor track and field while the women opened with a No. 22 ranking.
The McMurry men won the 2008 outdoor national championship bring home the first-ever national championship of any kind to McMurry whose athletic programs began when the school opened in 1923. The 2009 squad followed with a second-place finish at nationals and are poised to make another strong run in May.
Individuals from McMurry's team have already combined for 14 automatic or provisional marks for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships set to be held in Berea, Ohio on the campus of Baldwin Wallace College May 27-29.
According to RaceBerryJam.com, a respected track and field results and rankings web site, McMurry is projected to win the national title as it stands through last weekend's meets.
Wednesday's release represents marks accumulated by teams in the 2010 outdoor season through last weekend as reported to the Track & Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS). Mathematical formulae are used to compile a team's ranking based on an athlete's or relay's standing in relation to others in the same event across the country. A team's score in the national team rankings is a reflection of its “cumulative” chances as it relates ultimately to the NCAA Championships. Also released this week is the regional team index, a reflection of a team's all-around strength in relation to other teams in their region.
The women have two provisional marks thus far in the outdoor season both coming in the pole vault with
Holly Rollins and
Charisma Tucker each eligible to be picked up for the national meet.
In both the men's and women's polls, McMurry is the only Texas team ranked in the top 25.
