ABIELNE, Texas - McMurry University's two-sport standout,
Jake Mullin, was honored regionally and nationally for his performance for the 2010 baseball season recently. Last week, Mullin was named honorable mention all-America by D3baseball.com before he received first team ABCA/Rawlings all-West Region honors Wednesday.
Mullin, who set school records for batting average (.462) and on-base percentage (.570), also led the American Southwest Conference in both categories along with walks (33) and slugging percentage. He was named the ASC West Division Player of the Year May 11.
Four other players from the ASC were honored on D3baseball.com's fourth-annual all-America team including Hardin-Simmons' Regan Dixon, Mississippi College's Bo Bell and Texas Lutheran's Brad Orosey.
Orosey and Dixon joined Mullin on the ABCA/Rawlings first-team all-West Region squad and went on to be named all-Americans giving each two national awards for the season. Also from the ASC were Sul Ross State's Brennyn Smith and Mississippi College's Tyler Seaman on the first-team all-region squad. Eleven other players from the ASC were named second or third team all-region by the ABCA.
Mullin becomes the sixth player in McMurry school history to earn all-America honors joining Joe Fichera, Josh Lee, Albert Carrizales, Brent Voorhees and Derek David. The junior outfielder also had 11 home runs, 19 doubles and 44 RBI's along with four outfield assists in 38 games.
As a standout quarterback on McMurry's football team, in his first year under center, he threw 25 touchdown passes and 2,749 yards in nine games to earn honorable mention all-ASC honors. He becomes the first McMurry athlete to earn all-conference awards in two different sports since 2008 when Bert Green earned honors in track and football.
