War Hawks ranked No. 24 by AFCA; first coaches' poll ranking since 1999

Hal Mumme is now 17-12 in his third year as head coach and has brought a national ranking to the program for the first time since 1999
Week 8 AFCA Coaches' Poll

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's football team earned its second national ranking in as many days, this time by the American Football Coaches Association at No. 24. The War Hawks, ranked No. 20 by D3football.com for the first time in school history Sunday, were ranked Monday by the AFCA for the first time since 1999.

The War Hawks defeated Louisiana College Saturday in Pineville, La. to move to 7-2 overall and 6-1 in American Southwest Conference play. Barring a loss to 3-6 Mississippi College Saturday in Abilene, the winner of McMurry and Louisiana College's game last Saturday was projected to propel either team to an NCAA Division III playoff berth.

The Wildcats were ranked No. 20 by D3football.com and No. 22 by the AFCA and dropped out of both polls after the loss.

The AFCA began ranking teams in 1999, and McMurry ranked as high as No. 21 after a 7-2 season. However, the team hadn't been ranked since that season. D3football.com began rankings teams in 2003, and McMurry cracked in for the first time in school history.

Several McMury teams were ranked in various polls before the program joined the NCAA in 1996.

The War Hawks will play host to the Choctaws of Mississippi College Saturday at Wilford Moore Stadium at 2 p.m .in the regular season finale.
