ABILENE, Texas – No. 11-ranked Chapman University pounded McMurry 10-1 Friday at Walt Driggers Field thanks to a strong starting pitching performance from Brian Rauh and late offense from the Panthers in the sixth and ninth innings.
Rauh moved to 2-0 on the season with a 10-strikeout performance in a complete game where he allowed only three hits and one unearned run. He retired 12-straight hitters from the last out in the fourth to
Greg Guse's two-out double in the eighth inning. McMurry's only run came in the second inning when
Matt Thompson scored on a wild pitch after initially reaching on an error.

Zack Hewitt pitched well for five innings. However, he ran into trouble in the sixth when he walked the leadoff batter and then on a potential double-play ball, Guse recorded a throwing error in an attempt to get the lead runner and both were safe. From there, the Panthers pounced with two consecutive doubles by Adam Koridch and Charlie Piro that brought home three runs before Mark Saatzer singled home a run to cap the four-run sixth.
Hewitt was lifted after the Prio double and finished the game with five innings pitched, five hits, five runs, four earned, three walks and three strikeouts with the loss moving him to 1-1 on the year. Maldanado pitched well for three innings but ran into trouble in the ninth, and he along with
Derek Patterson combined to give up five runs on four hits in the top of the ninth.
Piro and Saatzer finished with three RBI apiece with Piro collecting a game-high three hits. The Panthers moved to 2-4 on the season while McMurry dropped to 1-2.
The teams will square off in a doubleheader with a seven inning contest scheduled for 1 p.m. followed by a 9-inning game to cap the series. McMurry is 5-14 all-time against Chapman.
