DELAWARE, Ohio – Kevin Cunningham won the national title in the 400-meter hurdles and helped his teammates Gavan Bass, John Keith and Kenneth Turner win the 4X100-meter relay title on the way to a third-place finish for McMurry's men Saturday at the 2011 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. McMurry scored 36 points Saturday, finished with 50 total and was third behind North Central College (58) and Wisconsin-La Crosse (56).

The third place finish is the third-best finish for McMurry's men in school history behind the War Hawks' national title in 2008 and runner-up finish in 2009.

Cunningham smoked his competition in the 400-meter hurdles by posting a time of 51 seconds flat while his closest competitor, Demetrius Rooks of Rowan, finished second with a 51.98. Cunningham's first-place finish not only solidified him as national champion, but he scored 10 points for the War Hawks who entered the day at sixth place with 14 points.

McMurry got 10 more when Cunningham teamed up with his aforementioned teammates to cross the line at 40.76 seconds, which was just 0.01 seconds off the stadium record at Ohio Wesleyan's Selby Field and the George Gauthier Track. McMurry finished ahead of Buffalo State's tandem that crossed with a time of 41.04 seconds. The War Hawks were seeded third in the finals after Thursday's preliminaries.

Turner, who placed eighth in the preliminaries Friday in the 100-meter dash placed second overall to score eight points for McMurry with a time of 10.92 seconds, which was just 0.02 seconds off the leader.

The men capped the day with a second-place finish in the 4X400-meter relay scoring eight points with a time of 3:11.50 just 0.05 seconds behind Rowan for the crown. The War Hawks' tandem included Cunningham, Kolby Barnhill, Bryce Williamson and Terry Smith.

On the women's side, the McMurry women placed fourth in the 4X100-meter relay with a time of 47.12. The group included Kendra Coleman, Shanita Coleman, Carla Burton, and Clemitra Smiley who jumped three spots from their No. 7 seed in Thursday's preliminaries.

All in all, McMurry had nine men earn at least one all-America honor: Paul Davis (Shot Put), Stephen Toler (Pole Vault), Kevin Cunningham (400-meter hurdles, 4X100-meter relay, 4X400-meter relay), Kenneth Turner (100-meter dash, 4X100-meter relay), Gavan Bass (4X100-meter relay), John Keith (4X100-meter relay), Bryce Williamson (4X400-meter relay), Kolby Barnhill (4X400-meter relay), and Terry Smith (4X400-meter relay).

The women finished with six points overall, which was 37th out of 82 schools that sent competitors. Shanita Coleman was the War Hawks' only multiple all-America honoree with her performance in Thursday's long jump.
