McMurry University and the Athletic Training Program are searching for you. We are looking for high school students who want to pursue a career in the health, fitness, and medical fields. Our school and program offer degrees that will prepare you for careers in these versatile professional areas. Allow us to give some information about the school and athletic training program.

McMurry University is a private college in Abilene, Texas, with a student population of 1,500.  Being a small University, McMurry is a close-knit community where it is easy to get plugged in.  There are several options available for on-campus housing as well as food services. McMurry also has a strong social-club tradition along with a well-established intramural program.

One of the great compliments to the University is the athletic training program. The program is extremely hands on and works directly with McMurry’s 19 intercollegiate athletic programs that compete in the NCAA Division III.  McMurry has a proud athletic history with several sports enjoying success at the conference, regional and national levels.  McMurry won its first-ever National Championship in men’s outdoor track & field in 2008.

The full-time athletic training staff includes one head athletic trainer and two assistant trainers.  Students involved in the athletic training program work directly with the full-time staff in assisting McMurry student-athletes.  Student athletic trainers are extremely valuable and are counted on to evaluate, assess and rehab all sports-related injures/conditions as they progress throughout the program.  Student athletic trainers are viewed as members of the athletic support staff, are able to travel with the teams and fully experience the athletic lifestyle.

Each semester, every student athletic trainer can be enrolled in athletic training related classes. In addition to training classes, each student participates in the athletic training lab. To complete the training lab, students must gain observation hours in accordance to state law. These observational hours can include attending practices and game/event competition.  Each student will take the training lab every semester while at McMurry. After completion of the state requirements, the student will be prepared to sit for the Texas Athletic Trainer Examination, in order to be a licensed athletic trainer in the state of Texas.  (The state of Texas leads the nation in athletic training jobs, and the recent downturn in the economy has not affected the athletic training job market).

If you have any further questions about the program, please feel free to contact Janet McMurry, the Head Athletic Trainer, at jmcmurray@mcm.edu, or the Assistant Athletic Trainers, Jay Spencer or Larry Walls, at jay.spencer@mcm.edu and larry.walls@mcm.edu. Or call us at (325) 793-4648.
